Wise Men
Christians are funny in that they celebrate certain holidays on specific days when there’s no mention of the day, month or even year of when they actually happened.
For example, Christmas is celebrated December 25th. If you ask any Christian in America what day Christ was born on, they will confidently say December 25th. But if you ask them to point to the verse in the Bible or any other text where that is documented, they’ll come up empty. (I thought it ironic when I heard that churches were rescheduling their services because Christmas fell on a Sunday. Apparently, they didn’t want to compete with the commercial side of Christmas.)
Why? Because if Jesus really was a person, no one knows the date of his birth. It’s not recorded in the Bible, that’s for sure. So why do we celebrate December 25th as his birthday?
Because when Christians wanted people to stop celebrating the pagan solstice, they had to give them another holiday in return.
So the Epiphany supposedly happened on January 6th, the 12th day of Christmas. Again, there is no proof of that in the Bible. In fact the first recorded celebration of the holiday occured 400 years after the event supposedly happened. Obviously, if December 25th is a made up birthday, then we really have no idea when the Epiphany really happended either.
Like most things related to Christianity, it isn’t even consistent between different sects.
Depending on your flavor of Christianity, it’s either a one day event, or a weeks long celebration; it either starts on January 6th, or January 19th, or isn’t celebrated at all.
It’s debateable whether wise men still follow Jesus. I think it can be argued that there are some smart people who still believe in the fairytale, simply because they were indoctrinated at such an early age.
But for those of us who broke out of our indoctrination, or were never indoctrinated to begin with, it’s hard to consider someone is wise when they believe God sends (or at least doesn’t prevent) earthquakes, floods, windstorms, and deadly diseases. Especially when here in Ferndale, that’s all in just one week!
