Denying Sin
Here’s the text this week’s sign references:
John 1
5 This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all.
6 If we claim to have fellowship with him and yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live out the truth.
7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
8 If we claim to be without sin, we deceive ourselves and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we claim we have not sinned, we make him out to be a liar and his word is not in us.
Here’s my rebuttal:
5 If God is omnipresent, and he is full of light and there is no darkness, then how do you explain the three mass murders that happened in California just this week? If this first claim were true, it would be impossible to sin.
6 The darkest person I know of in Ferndale is the person who posts these weekly signs. He has managed to lie so much that he has divided the community. He claims to have a fellowship with god, but he walks, talks, and bathes in darkness.
7 This verse is just Christian mumbo-jumbo, like most of the Bible. The blood of Jesus purifies you? It’s really just an excuse to drink wine on Sunday morning.
8 Here we get to the heart of the quotation. I don’t think anyone is going to deny that there is sin in the world, and that they’ve probably done something bad in their own lives.
But the definition of sin is highly variable depending on what religion you believe in. Hell, if you’re an Orthodox Jew it’s a sin to light your stove or open your refrigerator on the sabbath. Most of us would scoff at such actions being sinful, but appliances are sold with special programs to accommodate the Jewish belief. Your sin is not necessarily my sin.
Take for example, homosexuality. St. Marks in Ferndale seems to be very hung up on it being a sin. I’m not really sure why homosexuality would be a sin. It doesn’t harm anyone as long as it’s consensual, just like heterosexual sex. What two people do in the privacy of their bedroom should be of no concern to a church, or a government.
Now the reason a church doesn’t want you to be homosexual is that you will not create any offspring. No offspring, no new generation to indoctrinate. Only by indoctrinating the youth will a church survive, and the ministers, priests and rabbis are all counting on adding to their flock so they can scrape more of the public’s wealth for their benefit.
The biggest liar in our community is the individual who stands on a pulpit every Sunday and tell’s you that there is a god that is in control of the environment and is protecting your health, and that you need to confess your sins for it to all work.
9 Confession of your sins and purification are a scam. Do something wrong, go to church and tell your priest about it, and everything is ok. Um, yeah, that’s not how it should work. Apologies and compensation to the victims of your sin would be much more productive, along with promising to them that you won’t make the same stupid mistake again.
10 This doesn’t make any sense logically. Just because you lie, that doesn’t make God a liar. Besides, God can’t be a liar, he’s perfect.
There’s only one liar in all this, and it’s the guy taking your money every Sunday so he doesn’t really have to work.
